What is Dalvik?
269

Dalvik was the process virtual machine (VM) in the Android operating system that ran applications written for Android. It was an integral part of the Android software stack and the foundation of the Android ecosystem.

The Dalvik VM was designed to be easy to optimize, and was an integral part of the Android software stack. It was optimized to be small, fast, and efficient, and was designed to run on low-power devices with limited resources.

Dalvik was replaced by Android's current runtime, called "Android Runtime" (ART), in Android 4.4 "KitKat". ART performs ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation, which means that the application code is compiled to native code when the application is installed. This allows the code to execute faster, but it also means that the installation process takes longer.

Despite being replaced by ART, Dalvik is still an important part of the Android ecosystem and many apps continue to use it as a runtime.
