What is WPS?
186

WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and it is a method for simplifying the process of connecting devices to a secured wireless network. WPS was designed to make it easier for users, especially those without technical expertise, to set up a secure Wi-Fi connection without having to manually enter long and complex network security keys or passphrases.

Here's how WPS typically works:

  1. Button Push (Physical Method): Many Wi-Fi routers and devices with WPS support have a physical button labeled "WPS." To connect a new device to the network, you press the WPS button on the router and then initiate the WPS connection on the device within a specified timeframe (usually a couple of minutes). This action establishes a secure connection without entering a passphrase.

  2. PIN (Personal Identification Number) Method: Alternatively, some devices support WPS using an eight-digit PIN code. You can enter this PIN on the device to connect it to the network. The router also has a PIN, and when both PINs match, a secure connection is established.

WPS was initially developed to simplify Wi-Fi setup, but it has faced several security concerns over the years:

  • Vulnerabilities: WPS has been found to have significant security vulnerabilities that could potentially allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to a Wi-Fi network. For example, some implementations of WPS did not adequately lock out repeated PIN attempts, making it easier for attackers to guess the PIN through brute force attacks.

  • Brute-Force Attacks: Attackers can try multiple combinations of PINs until they find the correct one, especially when routers do not have proper lockout mechanisms. This can compromise network security.

Due to these security concerns, it is generally recommended to disable WPS on your Wi-Fi router if it is enabled by default. Instead, use strong WPA2 or WPA3 encryption with a complex passphrase to secure your network. Most modern routers have the option to disable WPS in their settings, and it's a good practice to do so to protect your network from potential vulnerabilities associated with WPS.
