When it comes to Linux, rather than Windows or Mac OS it's providing quite wide options to go for based on requirements.
Even it looks confusing for beginners to choose which "distro" is fitting with user, anyone can easily figure it out after testing it by personal.
Most of mentality and working mechanism are same as usual, difference between Distros are usually based on Styling and Ready Packages, Software which is offered by related Distro.
If you ask my opinions based on Linux Distros based on Purposes:
If you are going to use it for "personal", due to there are lot of alternative of Softwares and stable, running community "Ubuntu" is a good option for "beginners" and people who is satisfied with its provided options.
If you are going to use it for a "web server", there is no other distro you should choose, "CentOS"!
